MIDLOTHIAN COUNTRY CLUB
In the mid 1890's, a group of prominent business leaders discovered a magnificent sweep of rolling, wooded prairie 18 miles southwest of the city. They agreed that the 208 saucer-shaped acres, with a beautiful brook flowing through the center, would be an ideal site for one of America's first eighteen hole golf courses.
A few years later, after the land was purchased and the club incorporated, Chicagoans would often see John G. Shedd, R.H. Donnelly and other "society" people boarding Rock Island trains after business hours and disappearing into the wilderness beyond Englewood.
No one ever expected that people would go out into the "moors" for pleasure, so they guessed that some big railway or manufacturing deal was on. Then, almost by accident, someone discovered that their destination was America's largest country club - Midlothian - and the secret was out!
Today, friendship and tradition still come together beautifully! With the exception of mature trees which line its lush fairways, Herbert Tweedie's original design remains substantially unchanged. When enhanced by its spacious surroundings, swimming pool and elegant new clubhouse, Midlothian offers exceptional opportunities to strengthen existing friendships and forge new ones.
GOLF
Perhaps the greatest aspect of Midlothian is its ability to attract people who share a love for the fame of golf. Whether you're an accomplished player or just beginning, Midlothian offers programs, competitive events and a friendly membership to help you enjoy the game. Excellent practice facilities and an outstanding teaching staff help everyone who seeks to improve their game.
Walter Hagen won his first major championship at Midlothian, the 1914 National (U.S.) Open. Billy Casper won two Western Open titles at Midlothian and Leonard Thompson's 64 in the second round of the 1973 Western Open established a course record that still stands today.
Today, members enjoy a full schedule of tournament golf, including Derby Day in June, Pater Filius, the nation's oldest father/son tournament and Midlothian Cup Invitational in July and the annual Benedict (Husband/Wife) tournament in August. Men, women and juniors are welcome to participate in weekly events throughout the golf season and each group crowns their champions at the end of the summer.
DINING AND SOCIAL
Midlothian features a variety of social and dining facilities, including the Main Dining Room, Thorne Room, Derby Room, Ladies Card Room and Mixed Grill. While most rooms offer a beautiful view of the golf course, there's nothing more enjoyable than dining or relaxing outdoors on the veranda.
Whether you're looking for intimate formal dining, special meeting or conference areas or a luxurious banquet for 250 guests, Midlothian offers unparalleled facilities and a highly professional staff to address every need.
SWIMMING
While Midlothian offers a successful and growing swim team for children, it also provides a refreshing break for families on long, hot summer days. Certified water safety instructors are always on duty and club facilities include a designated area for sun bathers and a fenced-in kiddie pool for the little ones.
Once you and your family experience the Midlothian tradition, you will appreciate the club's greatest advantages…outstanding golf, beautiful surroundings and lasting friendships.
