Joe Rice, a Chicago-area developer, found a 225 acre parcel of land in Lake County that had previously been the Smith estate (of Merrill Lynch Pierce Fenner and Smith fame). The parcel had woods, hills, a lake and an old nine-hole golf course, which may have been designed by famous golfer Bobby Jones. The property also contained two log cabins and two windmills.
Rice and Thorngate bought the property quickly in 1986. They sold 53 acres of the newly acquired property to developers. Two years after the initial purchase, Joe Rice and his development company purchased an adjacent 158 acres. This is in the process of being developed residentially, but 75 acres have been deeded to the golf course for their additional nine holes.
The clearing of the land for the course began in April of 1987. The course was first played in April of 1991. The clubhouse was completed in June of that year.
Dick Nugent, a nationally known golf course architect, designed the original 18 hole course, which opened in 1991. He also designed the third nine when the club was able to expand in 1995. Mr. Nugent was consulted again for the reconfiguration of the three nines which occurred in 1996. The Ivanhoe Club is now in a unique position of providing a 27 hole facility with three distinct nine hole courses; the Forest, the Marsh, and the Prairie.
